Visiting Berry College
In the city,of Rome Ga.there are three colleges. They all offer basically the same degrees, but of these three, there is one that is so unique. This is Berry College. Recently, a friend and myself drove through the Berry campus and took photos. Some of the photos are of a lake called Swan Lake. The lake is very inviting but beware of the bunches, and bunches and bunches of geese. The geese will greet you with a possible peck and indicate that if you have food, "HAND IT OVER". There maybe only one or two swans. Maybe the lake should be called Geese Lake. The lake is just a small part of the beautiful places to see on the Berry campus. According to Berry College's web site, the campus is 26,000-acres. Some of the buildings are made of modern brick, others are built from stone as well as some are log cabin structures. To get more information the web site is http://www.berry.edu/about/. When you enter the campus you might see deer as well as cattle grazing on the land. How often would you experience being greeted by animals upon entering a college campus? If you are a student, the college makes available the opportunity for students to get student work for experience as well as to help towards college tuition. It is not uncommon to see students dealing with the animal life on campus. On campus there is a horse stable. Students can board their horses. In years past, visitors could go into the stable to visit the horses, but this is no longer permitted.I, remember having to watch very carefully where you walked ,as you might step in some horse.....I, always enjoyed feeding hay to the horses. While at the stables, usually you would see a few resident cats on the prowl for a delectable mouse or two. Thank goodness, I never was invited to dinner. It makes me sick even thinking about this. I,still can't get this memory out of my mind. Enough of this. There are three churches on the campus which are used for services and weddings. The most popular church used for weddings is Frost Memorial Chapel which sits atop a hill and is made out of stone. The smallest church is Barnwell chapel that was made using logs. The interior is very simple and has dark wood beams, and wooden pews. You will see the picture we took of Barnwell in this post. The 3rd. church is Berry College Chapel. To view these go to the Berry website. Have you ever seen a large water wheel on a college campus? well, Berry has this. It is one of the main attractions for visitors to view. Usually once a year, the water wheel is in operation. There are alot of other beautiful places and things on this campus that gives any visitor pleasure to see. Years ago, I had spent my first date with my husband, Gerry exploring this campus. Whenever, I am on the campus my mind can't resist going back in time remembering walking and talking with my husband while enjoying the inviting scenery of this college campus. After sharing this post, I can't imagine that anyone could not recognize this college campus as being so unique and a place to slow down, view man and God's works, and to meditate.

This looks like a very wonderful and unique place - very unlike most colleges!
ReplyDeleteJane
Thanks for the pictures to show the beauty of this place. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't visited Berry since I was very young. It was beautiful then, beautiful now! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Rose. My daughter graduated from Berry two years ago. It is indeed unique and beautiful. Her first two years were carless, so on weekends that she came home I would often pick her up on Fridays and take her back on Sunday afternoons. It was always a pleasure to be on the campus, and I still have much to see there. The first two years my daughter lived in the Ford buildings. These look like old European estates and many people call them The Castle. Her last two years were spent on the campus proper which put her closer to classes.
ReplyDeleteOf course she is happy to be in grad school, but she will always miss that special feeling of living and going to college at Berry.
Wow! Who knew there was a college that unique! I know I didn't know about it. Sounds like it would be a wonderful place to go to college. How wonderful to be able to have your horse there too! Incredible!
ReplyDeleteHave a Great Day!

Got a SERVICE UNAVAILABLE from Blogger --so this is my 2nd post.. Delete this IF you get the first one. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful and unique campus, Rose.. The city of Rome is a unique place too--with lots of artsy people around (I guess due to the colleges).
I interviewed for a job there in 1999 at a Methodist Church there. They offered me the job--but I decided to take the job in Hendersonville, TN instead.. Glad i did though because that is where I met George.
Hugs,
Betsy
Those are beautiful pictures. It's definitely not your average college!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have some very sweet memories of it too. :)
I've heard of Berry College, but never seen any photographs. What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures! So this is an actual college? Do they have dorms? I'm thinking not. How many students do they have? This is for sure so strange!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty place to visit, enjoy and learn! I love college campuses...they usually are great places to just walk around and enjoy the buildings and feel all the knowledge just oozing out of the windows! Have a great week Rose!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the great photos of Berry College and some interesting information. :-)
ReplyDeleteNever been there my friend. But...I did just find out we will be visiting Georgia for a few days. I am very excited. I've wanted to visit Helen Keller's birthplace since I did a report on her in grade school. My hubby is finally taking me.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sweet words you left on my blog regarding my father. They meant more to me than you know~
Love to you~
Rebecca
Love how it has retained the old world appeal and feel. None of that hustle and bustle of the new campus's.
ReplyDeleteVery nice thanks for sharing!
This is one of my favorite campuses to drive through. We visited the Martha Berry house and gardens years ago and really enjoyed our visit on a sunny Autumn afternoon. So glad you shared this part of GA with your friend.
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous college!!! Stunning! Hope all is well with you!
ReplyDeleteGood evening Rose, my daughter is now in Arlington, Va. attending George Mason Law. Miss her a whole bunch. When she was at Berry we got to see her at least every few weeks, now it is a few times a year. Also at Berry we could attend various functions. You can even make a reservation and stay on the campus in some of the cabin lodges. We stayed at one that even cooked a big breakfast for everyone. I keep hoping that I will find time to take a couple of days and treat myself to a mini vacation. Would love to stay at Berry and tour the area. Can't think of the name off the top of my head, but there are the gardens in a neighboring town, and Cave Springs is nearby, and of course the Berry campus. You are right there have been some massive changes. The new Cage Center took out a lot of trees. I hope they contiune to plant some. The main drive is so beautiful, I hope they realize that, and not let to many cahnges occur on that stretch under that trees.
ReplyDeleteIt would be ridiculous to have all that space and over build or make it crowded.
Rose...We are heading out in a few days and will be visiting with my sister in Tennessee and then traveling farther east to the childhood home of Helen Keller (Ivy Green) in Alabama. I did a report on her in 7th grade and I've loved her childhood story for as long as I can remember..
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Georgia so we are going to try and make it there as well. Depends a lot on our time and the weather.
I'll let you know~

It sounds like a wonderful place and I personally would love the geese...I just wouldn't give them my back. Ahhhh, but it brings back romantic rememberances of you and your husband. Make the trip all that more inviting and memorable. I'd love to stroll around the grounds myself. Hope you're having a great week! Great pictures.
